8 Plays That Got Us Here

In the NFL every team walks a tightrope . With only 16 games in a season every game brings with it a high level of importance.  Each of these games can be decided by just one play.  Which makes it safe to say that a season itself can be decided by a handful of plays.  Take our own Baltimore Ravens for example.   The Ravens have ridden an emotional roller coaster all year long, only to find themselves involved in the most celebrated sporting event in America.  The team many considered doomed after a lopsided home loss to the Denver Mannings on December 16th has made a vengeful run through the playoffs,  beating the best of the AFC.  These important playoff wins have given the Ravens a total of 13 wins for the season.  Some of these wins were tipped to the Ravens’ favor by  a few important plays;  plays that helped pave the road to New Orleans.  Here are 8 that we feel were most pivotal.

8.  Ray Rice

Week 6… Ray Rice’s 1 yard run vs Dallas…This run capped off a 73 yard drive that gave the Ravens an eight point lead late in the game.  The Cowboys still came close, but failed on a two point conversion.  They then missed a game winning field goal to lose by two.  On a day where the Ravens defense gave up a franchise record 227 rushing yards, the Ravens were lucky to escape with the win.

7.  Week 11… Jacoby Jones’ 63 Yard Punt Return at Pittsburgh…On a day where the Ravens offense struggled, Jones’ return was the only touchdown of the game for either side.  It proved to be the difference in the Ravens’ 13-6 victory.  Divisional wins are always important, especially against arch-rival Pittsburgh.

Week 9…Flacco to Smith Touchdown…The Ravens were coming off a bye but found themselves trailing Cleveland 15-14 with 4:26 left in the game.  On 3rd and 10 Flacco hit Torrey Smith, who made a great move to the pylon to give the Ravens the lead.  The Ravens went on to win 25-15.  The win was an important one for the Ravens, who had been drubbed by the Texans two weeks prior.

5.Week 3…Tucker’s 27 yard game winner vs New England…Justin Tucker hit his first ever NFL game winning field goal as he squeezed this 27 yarder through the uprights as time expired….Cundiff who?

Week 16…Flacco to Smith 6 yard TD vs New York Giants…The Ravens capped off a beautiful opening drive with this 6 yard Joe Flacco dart.  In the drive the Ravens found perfect run-pass balance, marching down the field with authority.  It was a great start to a blowout win over the Giants.  The Ravens offense hasn’t looked back since.

3.4th

Week 12…Ray Rice 4th down catch and run at San Diego…Looking at 4th and 29 on their own 37 yard line with 1:59 left and trailing 13-10 the Ravens seemed done for.  Not so said Ray Rice.  After catching a short throw Rice juked and dove his way to a first down.  This led to the game tying field goal.  The Ravens would win it in overtime.  It became evident that this team was not going to give in to anyone at any time.

2.hit

AFC Championship at New England…Bernard Pollard blows up Stevan Ridley…With the Ravens already up 21-13, this hit ended a New England drive and took the air completely out of Foxborough.  It was at this point in the game that New England realized they just didn’t belong.  The subsequent Raven drive ended in Anquan Boldin’s second touchdown, and gave the Ravens a 15 point lead that they would never relinquish.

Divisional Playoff at Denver….Jacoby Jones 70 yard TD with 31 seconds left…I don’t think I need to elaborate here.

We now look forward to The Super Bowl.  One more week of big plays.  We can’t wait.
